The drawn line, from Disney's first feature to Miyazaki's last.
the first animated feature; the industry starts here
a commercial failure and the most ambitious animation Disney ever attempted
the last film Walt Disney worked on, and the songs
marketed to children, and genuinely traumatising
Bluth's debut, and darker than Disney dared
the film that made Ghibli possible
the immigrant story as a children's film
Ghibli's first film, and its purest adventure
the film that opened anime to the West
the saddest animated film ever made
almost no plot, no villain, and perfect
69 minutes and a generation's first grief
hand-drawn characters composited into live action, by hand
Bluth at his strangest
Ghibli's gentlest
the Disney Renaissance begins
the first animated Best Picture nominee
Williams, and the improvisational voice era
the commercial peak of hand-drawn animation
dismissed on release, a generational touchstone now
"Hellfire," and Disney's darkest renaissance entry
the best non-Disney musical animation of the era
the gospel chorus, and Disney's funniest score
Miyazaki at his least cuddly
the strongest of the late Disney renaissance
the most ambitious non-Disney animation of the era
the last great hand-drawn Disney film
bombed, now untouchable
a troubled production that became a cult comedy
a flop with a permanent afterlife
the series' style at feature scale
Kon folding a life into film history
the high-water mark of hand-drawn animation
Disney's oddest and most heartfelt of the era
almost no dialogue, entirely singular
Kon's warmest, and a Christmas film
Ghibli's most romantic
the dream-invasion film *Inception* is measured against
memoir in stark black and white
Hosoda's warmest, and a great film about parenting
Takahata's farewell, drawn like brushwork
Miyazaki's most conflicted film
hand-drawn, Irish, gorgeous
bullying, deafness, and forgiveness, handled seriously
the anime that broke records worldwide
Cartoon Saloon in Kabul
a severed hand crosses Paris; far better than that sounds
hand-drawn animation with digital lighting, and a real Christmas film
Shinkai's follow-up, and the rain
briefly the highest-grossing film in the world
the best-looking 2D animation in years
Shinkai on disaster and grief
Miyazaki's farewell, maybe
no dialogue, animated in free open-source software
